Sense of belonging to a course is a key starting point for students to actively engage with learning activities. Research highlights that students who feel under-challenged by course activities and under- engaged by educators can lead to tardiness, absenteeism and eventually dropping out (Shernoff, et al; 2003). In Coventry University London, we embedded course hour within our curriculum design and pedagogy and have created a timetabled course time for every level for UG and PG students. This approach has led to enhanced partnership with students and course directors and raised the overall student engagement and satisfaction.
During this developmental session, the following topics will be discussed:· The importance of student engagement and its challenges for course management team· An embedded approach to course engagement and course community· How to enhance course organisation and management· Structure of course hours from beginning to end of learning journey· Course activities tailored for level and needs
