Description

This workshop will raise awareness of some of the real life challenges students face through remote learning and how this may impact on their mental health. The session will include the perspectives of students from demographic groups who may be impacted more than others, including students with disabilities, mature students, and international students. The session will present some practical solutions to support students mental health and wellbeing that can be easily applied in the online learning environment.

What are the benefits?

Providing a safe, secure and positive learning environment can ensure students have to opportunity to thrive in their studies, engage effectively and look after their own mental wellbeing. By understanding some of the issues in teaching and learning that may negatively impact on students mental health, we can consider practical ways to provide a more supportive, inclusive and positive learning environment in an online setting.

Topics covered include:

The four main areas that this workshop will focus on is: 1) creating safe spaces online for engagement and sharing (i.e. turning on camera, netiquette and ground rules)
2) encouraging and offering opportunities for socialisation and social connections,
3) flexible learning to allow all students to engage in their preferred way,
4) purposeful and meaningful learning with clearly communicated instructions.

Who should attend?

All staff who have student facing teaching roles or those involved in teaching and learning design and delivery
